What we are looking for?

As a part of Aalto Enternship program, we are looking for a summer intern who will work as a full team member with us during the summer. We also have an additional internship position open even if you are not an Aalto Student.

The great part of working for a small startup is that you are allowed and expected to wear many hats. As you ain't just a code monkey, it's a fantastic opportunity to learn a lot of different things.

Everyone has their unique combination of skills, Below is a list of concrete things that we do in Huikea. Let it be an inspiration for your application, just tell us why would you be a great summer intern hire for us.

Programmers

We are looking for great programmers in general. It's less relevant what languages or technologies you've used in the past, as long as you can show us that you can code for real.

You can be a tinkerer. You love to tweak and tune code to make game mechanics more fun or to make that transition animation to look just perfect. You have done small Flash games or something similar yourself. Or you can be a algorithmist. You know your CS. You get excited about hard problems, like writing AI for game units or scaling our back-end servers. We need both kinds of people.

We use our own Atemi framework for developing games. Our main game programming language is Atemi-spiced C++. On server-side we use mainly Python with Tornado Web Framework. Also Javascript, HTML and CSS skills always come handy.

Graphic Designer

We are also looking for a graphic designer. There's a lot of interesting work from drawing concept art for new games to designing small unit graphics for Dust Up.

Story teller

Be it a single tweet, a marketing copy or a scenario description inside the game, when you are writing, you are telling a story. We are mainly looking for programmers and graphic designers, but if you are a great story teller, have an excellent command of English and has a couple of complementary skills from the list below, we might have a job for you. Tell us a story why would you be the best hire for us.

Addititional skills

  • Game design
Have you designed your own small games? This is the fun part of being in game company! We are a small team and everybody has opportunities to participate in game design.
  • Balancing game mechanics
If you have implemented your own games or designed mods for games, you know how tweaking a couple of parameters can change the game in fundamental ways.
  • Sound & Music design
  • Designing virtual goods business models
Have you studied virtual goods based business models? You'd love to help us to design, analyze and optimize our business model.
  • System administration
Great system administrators don't have much to do, things are running smoothly without constant hand-holding. Thus this ain't a full-time job, but it's a great complementary skill. Our server stack involves e.g. Ubuntu Linux, MySQL, Python with virtual environments, Tornado web framework, Fabric and Monit.
  • Community support
Have you run or moderated an internet community site or have you been an active participant in a gaming community?
